"You'll never be able to take him underwater, you know."
"But he's so cute!" The mermaid threw the pie plate like a frisbee, to which the little Beagle yearling ran after it and then retrieved it before returning the pie tin to the mermaid, who was sitting upon a rock. "I think I should call him Fetch."
"That is the dumbest name-"
"Said a mermaid named Coral," the mermaid replied as she tossed away the pie plate again.
"That's not even fair, Charisea," Coral replied. "Plus my mother named me and I'm quite proud of it."
"Gosh, Coral, I'm teasing." Charisea giggled as the dog returned the pie plate yet again. She gave him a rough fluff of its hair before tossing it out again. "Dogs doggy paddle, you know. I think we could keep him safe at the lagoon. Nobody would think he's a stray there, since humans don't even know the place, and I could make a small bed of kelp for him to sleep on. All I need to do is find a shipwreck that contains a lifetime supply of dog chow."
"And where are you going to find that?" Coral asked. "Plus wet dog food smells terrible."
"Have a little faith." Charisea picked up the dog and nuzzled him on the nose. "Trust me!"

I thought I should have her play with a kitten, but then I wasn't sure if it'd hit too close to home.
