Meanwhile at Pattie’s house, the two friends have changed Bret back to normal.  Bret is exhausted, but human.  They rest in the living room over some iced Cokes, hoping to keep an agitated Bret calm.

"What am I going to do?  I can’t let Mom find out, who knows how she will react," Bret gasped.

"Take it easy, Bret!  You've already transformed in here once," Alex said.

"And I don't know how I would explain tire treads on the carpets," Pattie said calmly.

"This is no time for jokes!" Bret moaned.

"We're not joking, bro.  Listen, we're all in this, okay?" Alex asked.

"Right.  We'll come up with something," Pattie said.

"And besides, Bret, we will keep your secret," Alex said.
.
"I know you will... but ..." Bret began, looking at the clock on the wall.  "Oh, man, I was supposed to have been home an hour ago."

Alex and Pattie stop him from running.

"Calm down, Bret, you don’t want to change back into a car again do you?" Alex asked.

"No, but if I don’t hurry Mom is going to skin me alive,." Bret replied. He rushed for the door.

Alex and Pattie sigh.  "All right, I am going with you," Pattie said, following.

"Wait up!" Alex called, following as well.

They go outside and head off to Bret’s house, about two blocks away.  Bret is leading the way, and amazingly doesn’t change again.  When they reach his house, they find that his mom is home.

"Thanks for coming with me, guys, I’ll see ya tomorrow," Bret said as he caught his breath at the front step.

"You’re welcome, Bret.  But be careful... try not to change again," Pattie said.  She winks and kisses him on the cheek.

Alex placed a hand on Bret's shoulder.  "Yeah, don’t want your mom or Kris to find out do you?"

"Ugh, I forgot about Kris... if she finds out, she's going to kill someone," Bret muttered to himself.

"Just keep cool and you'll be fine," Pattie said with a smile.

"Thanks guys, you’re the best," Bret replied.  He then heads inside.

"Hi, Mom, sorry I’m late getting home." he said.

"Studying again?" she asked.

He nodded, realizing that he left his books at school.  "Uh, yeah.  Couldn't put that book down."

"That's nice, dear.  Dinner is almost ready." Mrs. Matthews replied.

"Ok, I’m going upstairs to my room to study some more, will you call me?" Bret asked.

"Of course.  It shouldn't be too long," Mrs. Matthews replied.

Bret goes upstairs to his room.  Inside, the heat of the day has made his room quite unbearable.  Perhaps he never noticed how hot his room was before, but soon he begins to sweat.

"Better get a fan to go in here, I wouldn’t want to change into a car during the night," Bret thinks to himself.

He wipes some sweat from his face, then he notices his hands, which are beginning to throb and turn into rubber.

"Oh, no! I’m changing into a car again!" Bret exclaims.

He rushes to the bathroom and turns on the cold water just as his hands turn into tires.  The cold water takes hold, and soon his hands revert to normal.

"That was a close one, can’t have that happening again," he thinks to himself.

"Bret dear, dinner!" Mrs. Matthews calls.
After dinner, he heads to the garage to find a spare box fan.  However, it is warm in the garage as well, and as the evening sun hits him, his hands morph into tires again.

"Damn, not again!" Bret gasps.

Before he can react, his feet become wheels and he falls to all fours.  Then, his torso stretched out and grew elongated.  Next, his lower body from the waist down grew outward from his hind quarters and morphed into the rear half of a car, followed by his shoulders and upper half shaping itself into the upper half of the same red car.  Finally, Bret’s head and face grew outward and upward, his eyes and mouth forming into the front end.  Once again a full sized automobile, his transformation completed as his mom came into the garage.

"Bret, was that you in here?  Honey?" she asked.

Bret kept quiet.  He wanted to answer, but didn’t' want to be responsible for giving him mom a heart attack.

"Hmm... he must have gone back upstairs." she said to herself.

She left.

"Now I have to change back, but how am I going to cool off?  I can’t do it myself," Bret thought to himself.

As though as an answer to his question, the doorbell rang.  Bret hears his mom answer it, and a moment later Pattie came into the garage.

"Changed again, Bret?  I thought I saw you in here," Pattie said as she smiled at him.

"Yeah, could you help me?" Bret asked.

"Sure." Pattie replied.  She walked over to the water faucet and got some water.  She then poured the water on Bret’s hood, and he soon began to change back to normal.

"Thanks, Pats, you’re the best," Bret replied.  He hugged her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

"You’re welcome, Bret," she said.  She blushed and returned the kiss.

"Geez, at this rate I’ll change back into a car again," he smirked.

"Oh, Bret!  But it would look silly if your mom came down here and saw me kissing a Camero," Pattie said with a laugh.

Both start laughing and go back into the main part of the house.  His mom is in the kitchen washing the dishes.

"Hey, Mom, is it ok for Pattie to stay awhile?"

"Sure, stay as long as you like Pattie," Mrs. Matthews replied.

"Thank you, Mrs. Matthews," Pattie replied.

They both go upstairs to Bret’s room and call Alex.

"Alex, want to meet somewhere to talk this over?" Bret asked.

"Yeah, sure, I will meet you at the arcade," Alex replied.

"Ok, we will be right there, bye," Bret said.

"Cool, bye," Alex replied.

They head downstairs.  Mrs. Matthews has just finished up with the dishes, and the dishwasher is running.

"Mom, we're heading to the arcade to meet Alex," Bret said.

"Oh, you're going out again tonight?  Okay Bret, but you know what time you’re supposed to be home," Mrs. Matthews said.
.
"Yes, Mom, I do. Don’t worry, I will be fine," Bret replied.  He kissed his mom on the cheek.

"All right dear.  Have fun," she said.

Bret and Pattie head over to the arcade, a short walk down the street.  Alex is outside waiting for them.

"All right, we are going to have to find out just how to keep you from changing at inappropriate times," Alex began.

"Especially in tight places.  A shame the world's not equipped with garages everywhere I go," Bret said.

"Cute," Pattie giggled.

"How about this?  I could just carry a super soaker around," Alex suggested.

Bret sighed.  "If that is what it takes, then do it."

"I'll work on getting one tomorrow.  In the meantime, feel like changing again?" Alex asked.

"Why?" Bret replied.

"Don’t you want to get used to it?" Alex shot back.

"Yeah, I do, I guess," Bret replied.

"Come on, Bret.  I'd love to go for a ride with you... like we used to," Pattie said.

"Well, then.  Get heated up and change," Alex said.

"Erm, but not near the front door.  Let's go to the back first," Pattie suggested.

Bret sighed.  "Very well."

They walked around to the alley behind the arcade, and Bret began to jog in place.  Soon beads of sweat broke onto his forehead, and the pain overwhelmed him.

"Stand back, it’s starting again," Bret warned.  His hands morphed into tires.

Alex and Pattie step back to allow their friend some room to change into a car. Bret’s body transforms into a car once more.  Soon it is all over, and the pain subsides.

"God, why does it have to hurt so much?" Bret asked after the transformation completed.

"Hopefully the pain will lessen as your body adjusts to it more," Alex replied as he climbed into the driver's seat.

"I hope you are right... but man, I sure wish I knew who shot that laser at me," Bret said.

"We should go out to area where it happened to find out." Pattie suggested.

"All right, we'll go there," Bret replied.

Once Alex and Pattie are settled, Bret drives them towards Marlowe Road.

Meanwhile at Chase Labs, the scientists that work for Dr. Chase have found the identity of the kid they accidentally struck the night before.

"Dr. Chase, we heard back from the DMV and have identified that boy that got struck last night." a scientist stated.

"Excellent, who is he?" Dr. Chase asked.

"His name is Bret Matthews, he attends Diego City High. The car that we also struck is his, it is a red Chevy Camero," the scientist replied.

"Great work.  Inform the guards to be on a look out for that particular car. Give them the license plate number and tell them that the car is actually a boy," Dr. Chase said.

"Are we certain that the two have indeed been combined by the ray, sir?" the scientist asked.

"Until we meet this Bret Matthews, we will assume the worst."

"Yes, sir, I'll phone the security office immediately,." the scientist replied.

"Notify me as soon as they spot him.  He must know how serious a fate he is in," Dr. Chase added.
"Yes, sir." the scientist says.

The scientist hurried off and reported the information to the guards at the main gate.

"Ok, we will notify you as soon as we see him." the first guard said.
"Thank you." the scientist replied, hanging up.
"What are they on the look out for?" the second guard asked.
"Something about that kid that was caught inside the perimeter last night," the first guard replied.
"They think that kid is going to return here?" the second guard asked.
"Apparently so, maybe they think the kid has questions."
"If I saw a blinding light like that, I'd never come back.  Even as a car," the second guard reasoned.

Both guards start laughing and keep an eye out for their soon to be visitor.

The friends soon arrive at the area on Marlow Road where Bret drove off the road.  The tire tracks are still visible in the dried mud.

"This is it," Bret said as he pulled to the side.

Alex and Pattie stepped out as they surveyed the area.  To their right at the bottom of the hill in the direction of Bret's tire tracks, was the massive Chase Labs complex that covered about three acres.

"That’s the Chase Labs over there, right?  You said the beam came from that direction?" Alex asked.

"Yes."

"Then let’s go over to the front gate and check it out," Alex suggested.

"The front gate?  I don't know about this," Bret replied.

"It's the only way in through the fence.  And who knows... they're probably looking for you too, Bret," Pattie said.

"Come on, Bret, don't you want to know whether you were struck accidentally or on purpose?  They may even be able to reverse the effects," Alex asked.

"You don't want to be like this forever, do you?" Pattie asked.

He started up his engine as his friends climbed back inside.  Then, he drove around the complex to the front side and up to the gate.
Turbo Teen, The Beginning Chapter 3.

Now Bret's at the point where he's beginning to wonder who to blame for his new condition. As for school; well, he manages to sleep through his exam. You can imagine what kind of grade he ends up with.

Things are beginning to develop, but I'll be honest with ya. Most of my stories have a great deal of set-up and at times the action seems slow. But when things do get moving, it's like a snowball atop a hill.

More chapters to come!
