PART TWO:  DAWN OF DISINTEGRATION

It has been six months since a young woman in Alburquerque, New Mexico has learned to adapt herself to her inner automobile.  Even throughout the hottest days of the long desert summer, she had been fortunate enough to keep the secret of the Porsche 911 Carrare, named Selene, since early April.
Now school was in full swing again, and she was a junior at Bremar High School.  Still sixteen but six months older, and hopefully wiser, Cindy Richards had since sold her old Geo to her best friend, Lina Christensen, who had finally gotten her driver's license.
But although the Geo was now in Lina's name, Cindy still drove it whenever the two were just bumming around their corner of town.
"Don't you think this is weird?" Cindy asked.
"What's weird?" Lina gazed out the window towards a shopping mall that was under construction.  "That we're in a recession yet they're building a brand new enclosed mall in the middle of nowhere?"
Cindy narrowed her eyes.  "Middle of nowhere?  They must've built a thousand houses over the summer… anyways, don't you think its weird that I'm driving your car, and that I can turn into one?"
"I've gotten past that speedbump," Lina replied.  "Not weird at all.  And besides, you need that money for that trip to France next winter."
"No, no…"  Cindy knew that this was the year that her language class trip coming up.  "Weird that I'm driving your car."
"It's your car, as far as I'm concerned.  I'm just holding onto it so that you have a place to transform whenever your air conditioner cuts out."
Cindy gave Lina a confused look.  "Was that the real reason?"
"And because it'll be really useful when I start my new career as a demolition derby race driver," Lina growled as she pretended to rev her own engine.
"You wouldn't!"  Cindy was moderately concerned, but she still laughed anyways.
"Nah, it's too slow anyways.  Now with that porsche engine of yours…"
"No way!  Never!" Cindy exclaimed.  "Don't you remember that time I bent my bumper?  I swear, my butt is still sore."
"Maybe if you walked everywhere instead of driving?"
"Maybe… then I'd be a normal girl again," Cindy uttered softly.
"What's that?"
"Nothing."  Cindy turned the wheel and drove into the school parking lot.

The matter was dropped, and school went about as usual.  Swimming and track practice was not yet started, so the two girls cruised around town during the afternoon.  Cindy came close to transforming into Selene only once, but managed to remain cool and the girls were able to go about their day.

In the morning, Cindy walked down the block from her house and turned the corner from her cul-de-sac.  She had found a spot near a city building - as far as she knew, it belonged to the water department - where she could safely transform behind it.
Today would begin no differently.
She pulled a spicy cinnamon candy that she and Lina had experimented with over the summer.  The cinnamon extract that they had used had caused Cindy to transform just at the touch, and the resultant hard candy they made was practically inedible.  But, it would do to get her warmed up.
Cindy unwrapped the bright red candy and popped it into her mouth, wincing at the sudden burst of heat.  She quickly kneeled onto her hands and knees, placing her loose backpack on her back as her hands turned into tires.  Next, her feet transformed as her hips began to flare out and form into fenders and a bumper.  As her transformation progressed, her stomach and chest formed into the passenger section with seats, doors, and seatbelts while her shoulders formed into the dash and windshield.  Lastly, her nose elongated and flattened out as her head formed into a hood, while her eyes formed into headlights and her cheeks into a front bumper.
Cindy had physically changed into Selene, a blue Porsche 911 Carrare convertible with a black roof, silver flames upon her hood, and a red Porsche emblem just above her radiator.
Selene fired up her engine, moving the seatbelt in her backseat to confirm that her backpack had made it, as usual.  The gearshift moved itself into gear, and the accelerator depressed itself to the floor as Selene made her way down the curb and onto the road.   She was on her way to school moments later.

Molly Turino, a fellow swim teammate of Selene's, met the supercar just outside the gym wing of Bremar High School.
"There you are.  I was thinking I might have to call the cops to find you," Molly said as the car pulled up to the curb.
"Little more traffic than I would've liked," Selene replied, speaking through her radio speakers as always.  "Shall we?"
Molly removed the lid of her water bottle and poured a scant amount onto Selene's hood.  The car began to shrink as the hood formed into a head, shoulders from the winshield, and hips from the rear, followed by hands and feet from tires last.  Selene had transformed back into Cindy Richards.
"I never get tired of seeing that," Molly replied as she helped Cindy to her feet.
Cindy slung the backpack over her shoulder, not realizing that her left hand still bore tire treads.  "Yeah, ain't it something?  Come on."

It wasn't until 1st period when Cindy realized that her left hand had not yet returned to fully human.  Excusing herself from the classroom, she rushed to the nearest restroom and inspected her hand.
It was grayer than normal, but not black; clear ridges that matched the tread of Selene were indeed noticeable.  The rubber seemed to feel like a glove that could not be removed.
"What gives?  Change back!" Cindy gasped as she washed cold water over her hand.  She frantically rubbed the water into it.
More treads appeared.  Her hand was appearing to curl.
Quickly, she stopped.  Almost panting, she paused and rested before getting herself more worked up.  She looked up and gazed into the mirror… noticing something near her forehead.
A faint outline of a porsche emblem.  Her forehead had not yet fully returned human either.
This was serious.

While Lina was in English class, a knock came at the door.
Mrs. Landen narrowed her eyes, removed her secretary style reading glasses and answered the door.  "Yes, Miss Richards?"
"I was sent by the office to collect Lina.  The principal needs her."
"Oh?  Usually they call…" Mrs. Landen mused.
"It's very important.  They pulled me out of class too."  Cindy covered her treaded hand with her right hand.
Mrs. Landen looked over Cindy carefully, but Lina grabbed her stuff and pushed her teacher aside.  "Better not keep the principal waiting!"
"Hmm…" Landen muttered before closing the door.

"What's wrong?  Cindy… you've got something on your forehead…"
"And my hand."  She showed Lina the tire treads.  "I can't get it to turn back into flesh!"
"Someone's bound to notice this… can you move your hands?  Maybe you can borrow my keys…"
"Lina, I hate to say this, but I think I should go ask Dr. Archuleta about this… I think I made it worse."
"What do you mean?"
Cindy reached behind her and patted her behind.  Instead of making a soft fleshy sound, however, the resulting noise was more like tapping the trunk of a car.
"You are something else, you know that?"
"Come on.  You drive."  Cindy pulled Lina down the hall.
"Wait, wait… we're skipping school?"
"I'd rather be responsible for skipping school than explaining why, wouldn't you?"
Lina nodded and took the point as they headed towards the parking lot.  "Yeah… I…eye…"
"What?" Cindy asked as they paused.
Lina gazed into Cindy's left eye, before quickly looking away.  Cindy's eye had the glazed appearance of a headlight, even though her eyelids and pupils were all human.
"What is it?" Cindy asked again, her voice becoming more frantic.
"Nothing, nothing… let's go."  Lina pulled the door towards the exit.
New Dawn, Part Two: Dawn of Disintegration

Cindy's story was never meant to end so aprubtly earlier this summer. So, in light of Jonesy's suggestion, I went ahead and finished it.

Well, it'll be finished shortly.

This is more of an intro chapter to what may be a pretty dark or disturbing story. Well... we'll get to that later.

As before, note that this has nothing to do with vampires.

Nice intro,I was surprised to find it in my messages!
wow, I don't know if its the timing of the season, but it has a very Sci-Fi/Horror feel to it, and your warning about dark and disturbing only intrigues me. Seems we'll see the dark side of this combination soon. Love the hybridination of Cindy.
ps: i don't know if its intentional, but isnt it "Disintegration" instead of "Desentegration"? Either way it invokes the classic title of "Dawn of the Dead".
great stuff!
