Description

A sketch of the DSS Valiant from my novel, The Buccaneer of Nemaris.

About the size of a fluyt or small clipper, the Valiant was commissioned in 1585 and was originally planned as a cargo ship for the Dieterian navy. It was later converted for merchant trade in 1589 as a gift for newly appointed Captain Christopher Janes in gratitude for services and courage to the royal navy. Essentially, it was a retirement present, though as young as Janes was at the time, it was an extravagent gift from the royal family.

Equipped with the finest technology at the time, the Valiant was designed with a unique stablization system that allowed the crew to manually shift weights located in the double hull to offset the balance in rough seas. It also had a spacious water tank beneath the captain's cabin to store fresh water for extended ocean voyages.

Suitable for a small crew of eight men, with captain, the mate, a cook and a cabin boy, it was small but larger than it appeared, capable of holding up to 30,000 pounds of cargo.
