Queen Athena and her youngest daughter, Princess Ariel.
The movie is oddly vauge about Ariel's age when Athena was killed by the human raiders. They're also very vauge in defining the Queen's character more. Yes, she was a loving mom, and yes they really don't know what happened her to her (was she captured? or only just killed by falling rocks?)
In the long run, I guess it doesn't affect the movie that much. All the same, this is indeed a touching moment. I would place Ariel at about two years old. Athena still looks too much like Ariel, but my theory there is that it makes Triton that much more attached to Ariel in the first movie.
Chances are they didn't want to really answer that question of her death. Can't have the kids crying 2 seconds into the movie, after all. Guess Disney decided to leave that one up to the dreamers.
The lineart is from Melly, as part of her 10 sketches. The background was made by me, but with reference from midnightstouchSTOCK [link] The coral (which looks like crap, if you haven't already guessed) came from an unfinished lineart. The plants, same place- but they at least turned out decent.
